Those simple yellow roses
My mother would smile tenderly when
A special day would arrive A day made special
By those yellow roses Always attached was the
Same message year in and year out It may
Have been one dozen or two or three and her
Eyes would glow like diamonds mined, so
Precious in wartime The yellow glow
Offsetting her pecan brown cheeks on many an
Anniversary, weeks from the Ides of March
And no other man could present my mother with
Any other gift, even her life or death, that could
Grow a seed of love in her heart from the same rich
Earth that grew those yellow roses My father’s
Eternal gift to his queen of every Nile in this world
And the next, those yellow roses speaking volumes
To me at a young age of loyalty and love that never
Wavers, of trust that endures the demise of the last petal of
Those yellow roses, a bond Xeroxed by mortals
To match brilliantly, a link of man to heaven, of Creator to creation
Those yellow roses came every year as the spring shook
Hands and bid farewell to the winter
And in those simple yellow roses I grew to manhood
My mother would smile tenderly when
A special day would arrive A day made special
By those yellow roses Always attached was the
Same message year in and year out It may
Have been one dozen or two or three and her
Eyes would glow like diamonds mined, so
Precious in wartime The yellow glow
Offsetting her pecan brown cheeks on many an
